RESIDENCE IN VARKIZA

2009

This project concerns a permanent residence in Varkiza, designed for a couple and their guests.

The plot includes a private forested area, which plays a key role in shaping the organization of the house as well as the arrangement of its programmatic units in plan and section.

The main units of the residence include: the entrance and living area, a bar, a studio, the bedrooms with their bathrooms and dressing rooms, the dining area with a wine cellar, the kitchen with storage spaces, and the pool with its landscaped outdoor zones.

These units are articulated through a series of intermediate indoor and outdoor spaces that highlight the significance of the “in-between” realm and invite multiple modes of inhabitation.

The outdoor area with the pool is framed to the west and south by the wings of the bedrooms and the reception–living area, creating dedicated zones that seamlessly extend daily life from the interior to the exterior (bar, barbecue, deck, bridge-balcony, outdoor dining).

The living room, with its distinctive roof structure and diffused natural light, enjoys a dual orientation (north–south) and opens eastward to a balcony. From there, it extends toward the terraced garden and the pool.

Our intention was for the design to guide the distribution of the residential functions within the architectural volume. The proportions, the selection of materials, and their detailed treatment aim to create a warm atmosphere and encourage the residents and their guests to fully connect with and inhabit the spaces.
